"Soul of Summer" captures a deep and vibrant Irish wildflower meadow as viewed through the ornate arched entrance to St. Michael's Church in Kildysart, County Clare.

I was passing by one day when I spotted the church's entrance still decorated with flowers after a wedding. That's when the idea of creating a peaceful Summer paradise beyond the doors of this wonderful historic building came to mind.

It's quite a unique church, built between 1828 and 1830, using stone from nearby Canons' Island in Ireland's Shannon Estuary. On the island, ruins of a 12th Century Augustinian abbey are an annual pilgrimage destination for local residents.

In the heart of the Irish countryside, a breathtaking tapestry unfolds, where autumn's palette dances harmoniously against the backdrop of eternal greens. Rich browns, vibrant oranges, sunny yellows, and deep greens converge, creating a serene embrace that captures the essence of nature’s beauty.

This tranquil scene near the quaint village of Lissycasey provides a moment of respite, inviting one to breathe deeply and soak in the soothing hues that blanket the landscape. As the eye wanders through this idyllic setting, the gentle whispers of nature echo all around.

A family of ducks glides gracefully across the surface of the pond, their soft quacks harmonizing with the rustle of leaves preparing to surrender to the earth. Each ripple in the water reflects not just the colours of the season but also the fragility of this serene moment, a reminder of the delicate balance we must cherish.

Yet, amidst this beauty, a quiet urgency lingers in the air—a call to recognize the subtle shifts brought on by climate change. The vibrant oranges and yellows may soon fade, overshadowed by the looming threat of disappearing habitats and altered seasons.

It is a poignant reminder that while nature’s autumnal splendour offers profound tranquillity, it also beckons us to be vigilant stewards of this breathtaking landscape. As the gentle breeze heralds the approach of cooler days, one can’t help but reflect on the cyclical nature of life—the inevitable drop of leaves that will give way to new beginnings in spring.

No visit to County Clare, Ireland, would be complete without a stop at the iconic Bunratty Castle, the centrepiece of the Bunratty Folk Park near Ennis and the Shannon Airport.

The current tower house is actually the fourth castle to be built on the site, which is believed to have been settled first in the 9th Century as a Viking trading camp. Built in 1425 by the MacNamara family, the current castle eventually became the seat of the Earls of Thomond.

After assorted battles, rebellions and involuntary changes of ownership in the succeeding centuries, Bunratty fell in to disrepair in the 1800s. By the late 1800s, the roof of the Great Hall had collapsed.

The castle was restored by the 7th Viscount Gort after be bought it in 1956. By 1960, it was redecorated with furniture, art and tapestries from the 1600s and opened to the public.

U.S. President John F. Kennedy dined at the castle during his visit to Ireland in 1963, and Jackie Kennedy later visited the castle in 1967 on a trip with her children, Caroline and the late JFK, Jr.

Coole Park in County Galway is the former estate of Lady Augusta Gregory, the Irish Dramatist who hosted many of Ireland's literary luminaries here in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

It's now a public park with many beautifully maintained hiking trails.
