Old Fenloe Graveyard, County Clare

While it might seem somewhat macabre to wander around these old graveyards, it’s actually quite fascinating. Each has its own history of hardship and humility… sorrow and sanctity… The gravestones tell many stories.

The Old Fenloe Graveyard near Newmarket-on-Fergus in County Clare has a history that dates back to the 6th Century when a monastic site occupied these grounds.

Recorded graves only date back to 1790, but numerous plots are marked only with a stone, the names, hopes and dreams of the dead left to fade into history.
